Authentic Souvenir Shopping in Argentina

One of the stresses of travel is souvenir shopping. The fastest way to lose friends and alienate people is to cut them out of the perfunctory gift giving that has become a mandatory post-travel practice. So when you wake up on your last day of vacation, in a cold sweat, remembering you forgot to pick up something for your sister’s kids you don’t have to settle for the cheesy key chain emblazoned with their name at the airport gift shop. In fact, here are some alternative ideas so that you never have to set foot in another soul crushing souvenir shop ever again.

Souvenir shops like the one pictured above are for the unimaginative and lazy. Just because something is found in a souvenir shop does not always mean that it is truly representative of the country you’re in. For instance, thongs emblazoned with the country’s name in gold are generally a no-no. For something that’s going to be truly reminiscent of your host country, in this case Argentina, go where the locals go.

Flea Markets

For something unusual and quirky take a trip to Palermo’s Mercado de Las Pulgas (Niceto Vega block 200 between Dorrego and Concepcion Arenales) where many antique shop proprietors head to in search of inventory. From reclaimed furniture to taxidermy there’s something for everyone here and best of all, haggling is a must.

Home Goods Stores

Argentines are a creative group of people and having largely descended from Italian immigrants, aesthetic means a lot to them. Everywhere you look design has been integrated into daily life and two home-good shops that whole-heartedly embody this ethos are Calma Chicha (Honduras 4909, Palermo SoHo) and NoBrand (Gorriti 5876). There are three hallmarks of Argentine culture: leather, mate gourds, and penguin shaped jugs, all of which have been updated from their traditional, pueblo form into modern and stylistic pieces. On any given day you can find these shops swarmed with young, fashionable Argentines looking to capture their culture in the most updated forms.

Antique Markets

The San Telmo antique market (Plaza Dorrego, every Sunday) is one of the most popular weekend activities in the city. Located in the oldest part of the city, San Telmo is characterized by its abundance of antique shops running the gamut from low to high-end. It’s the only neighborhood in the city that is completely devoted to selling its past, so it makes for perfect souvenir hunting grounds. The market sets up in the main square around 10 in the morning and snakes its way through the neighborhood north and south through cobble-stoned streets. Get there early to battle the crowds because by 1 the streets have usually been turned into a sea of bodies.

The Grocery Stores

If you ever spend a single day in Argentina you will inevitably eat dulce de leche at some point. Dulce de leche is to Argentines what peanut butter is to Americans and Nutella is to Europeans. Similar to caramel it’s an addictive treat that the Argentines put on almost everything; toast, yogurt, ice cream and donuts for example. The best thing about dulce de leche is that a 1-kilo tin of it (2.2 pounds) will cost you about $4.00 US and will last you long enough to get back home.

Lastly, stay away from the malls.  Even though Buenos Aires is home to the largest mall in South America it’s not worth a trip because the individual stores pay a very high rent in order to have representation in the mall; in order to make up for the rent the shops then raise their prices a considerable amount.  Instead, keep your shopping restricted to the high streets and other such areas in order to avoid exorbitant prices.

Reach out and Skype Someone

No matter where you are traveling to it’s always a good idea to check in with folks at home so they know you have arrived safely at your destination.  Depending on where you are traveling a quick phone call can end up costing you a fortune, and while email is great nothing is as reassuring to friends and family as hearing your voice, especially when you are on the other side of the world.    Skype makes keeping in touch affordableFREE!! It’s also very easy.  If you don’t know what Skype is, it’s a free instant messaging software that also allows you to make phone calls from your computer for free.  It only takes a few seconds to download and is very user friendly.  You might worry that you won’t get a clear connection.  I can tell you that from my personal experience this is not the case.  My husband has family in Indonesia and recently some of our relatives went to visit.  When they arrived they used Skype to call me (in upstate NY) on my cell phone to let us know they had arrived safely.   While they did sound a little distant and there was a very slight delay, I could hear them perfectly clear and they had no trouble hearing me.  I would definitley reccomend Skype as a way to keep in touch while on the road.

Concierge.com has a great article from Conde Naste Traveler on getting the best bang for your buck when it comes to cruising.   They spoke with experts on 17 of the top cruise lines and got the inside scoop on scoring the best deals.  This is a must read for anyone planning a cruise.  For example did you know that some of the best deals on the Queen Mary 2 are cabins with obstructed views and that in some of these cabins you can still get a great view of the ocean from a lounge chair?  Or that on Cruise West’s Spirit of Yorktown the lowest priced AA rooms open to a deck that is relatively private so it’s almost like having a balcony?  They also share great tips on which cabins are best for families with kids.  Be sure to check it out before you book your next cruise!

Boston Restaurant Week

With over 212 restaurants participating in this year’s Boston Restaurant Week it’s difficult to know where to begin. However, consider this a cheat sheet for the visitor with limited time to spend in the city, A Top 5 list based on cuisine, ambiance and price.

Best Sea Food Pick: Legal Sea Foods

New England is the land of lobster rolls, crab cakes and clam chowder. Seafood is serious stuff that is not to be treated lightly, and one restaurant that adheres to the area’s history and tradition of excellent seafood is Legal Sea Foods, a chain with a location in Copley. Don’t be put off by the fact that it’s popular enough to be a chain, it’s popular for a reason and has been consistently voted #1 in Zagat’s Boston survey for it’s tremendous menu. Generally the prices are a little on the higher side so the time is now to take advantage of the $33.09 prix fixe menu including an appetizer, entrée and dessert.

Best Eclectic Cuisine Pick: The Blue Room

Out of the way from the usual hustle and bustle of the city, The Blue Room is located in East Cambridge and is commonly known as “Foodie Heaven”. It has been reviewed by all the top magazines and has won accolades from Wine Spectator, Food and Wine, Gourmet, and Boston Magazine. In addition to offering a 3-course prix fixe menu that would make someone with even the most indifferent taste buds salivate, for $48.09 they’re offering wine pairings from their famous cellar. If you can only pick one restaurant to visit during the week, pick this one.

Best Sushi Pick: Osushi

Osushi in the Back Bay area stands out above the crowd, especially in an area that’s overrun with mediocre sushi restaurants. The sushi speaks for itself but the restaurant is one of the hippest sushi spots in the city and boasts a sexy and stylish clientele. Intimidating stuff for an outsider but don’t fret, the sushi bar is very welcoming, even if you look like you’ve been sight seeing all day.

Best Italian Cuisine Pick: Rialto

Boston boasts a proud and loyal population of Italian-Americans and for them, Italian food is and always will be the best food. One restaurant where it’s almost impossible to deny this claim is at Rialto, located in the Charles Hotel. On a rotating basis, regional Italian specialties are prepared with fresh New England ingredients creating a beautiful marriage between new and old world gastronomy. What makes this restaurant a favorite amongst Bostonians is the thoroughness of the menu, highlighting dishes from the North, South and everything in between.

Best French Bistro Pick: Chez Henri

At it’s worst French food can be overly ornate, stuffy and pretentious, but what makes Chez Henri so far apart from that mold is its Cuban twist that has won it 5 Best of Boston awards in consecutive years. Chez Henri specializes in time tested French favorites, reinvented; like steak frites with ‘toasted garlic bordelaise and spicy Cuban fries’ and foie gras with a ‘petite plantain Belgian waffle and pink peppercorn maple syrup’. For something a little more adventurous than the typical French bistro, Chez Henri offers the eater an adventure without the sense of danger that comes with not knowing whether one is going to like it or not. Every dish is a hit and it’s hard not to leave without feeling full and happy.

perseids

Who doesn’t love a clear summer evening when you can sit outside and relax under the stars? With the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing being commemorated this week, there seems to be a renewed interest in star gazing.  August 12th is the prime date this year to view the annual Perseid Meteor Showers.  During this spectacular show you can see up to 60 meteors per hour across the sky.  The best place to view the show is a remote spot away from light pollution.  Several prime viewing locations are offering special watch parties and viewing opportunities.   Many of California’s campgrounds offer clear views of the night skies.  Squaw Valley is hosting a Perseid Family Campout. Or you can head out the Mojave Desert for the Perseid Meteor Shower Star Gazing Party. If you are in Hawaii you can book a night sailing excursion with Wild Side Tours.   You can also check out your local planetarium, many will be holding programs about the Perseid in the days leading up to August 12th.  Some, such as the Adler Planetarium in Chicago will host star gazing parties on the 12th.   Happy star gazing!

baby-foot

Since my husband and I found out we were expecting our first child we have been overjoyed.  We cannot wait for her arrival in November and lately we have been spending our weekends preparing.  We’ve been trying to finish up home improvement projects, cleaning out closets, and decorating the nursery.  It seems as if the list of stuff we ”need” to finish grows faster by the day.  This is most likely due to pregnancy hormones that cause me to wake up in the middle of the night and decide that we must repaint or rearrange something before the baby is born.   Anyway, in the midst of all this hormonal nesting we were advised that we should plan a Babymoon, at least a few days away, just the two of us, before the baby arrives.   I loved this idea and immediatley refocused some of my hormonal craziness on trying to plan our trip.  As someone loves to travel I realize that we won’t be taking off on as many last minute trips as we do now.  We only have a few months left as a twosome so we should take some time to celebrate how far we’ve come and the new adventure we are about to embark on together.  Lucky for us many travel suppliers are catering to couples just like us and have special Babymoon packages.  Most offer weekend getaway packages that include spa treatments, special treats for mom and baby, and in-room luxuries for the couple.   The Fairmont in Chicago offers moms the chance to create their own custom ice cream flavor, a $50 gift card for shopping at Macy’s, an in-room massage, and a consultation with Chicago jewler Kristen Amato to design their own “push present”.   The Hotel Teatro in Denver offers moms a pedicure and a gifts for the new arrival.   At Mohegan Sun, Dad can spend some time playing in the casino while mom enjoys a pregnancy massage and ice cream.   Now the hard part is choosing a destination!

Have you been on a Babymoon? Any suggestions for us?
