New York City which is commonly referred to as ‘the Big Apple’ is one of the most coveted tourist destinations in the world. The vivacious Spanish city of Barcelona which was immortalized forever in Woody Allen’s 2008, hit oeuvre Vicky Christina Barcelona is a truly magnificent destination that is a year round tourist magnet.  In fact Barcelona which is located in the autonomous Spanish community of Catalonia is largely regarded as a gateway to the famed Spanish coastal region of Costa Brava.

The soul of a city is most  often revealed  at its markets and in order to discover the soul of Barcelona you should head to the city’s main market called the Mercat de La Boqueria or simply ‘La Boqueria’ which is located near the Las Ramblas and is populated by over a thousand stalls whose vendors sell all sorts of products like fresh fish and seafood, meats, poultry, game, fruits and vegetables, herbs, breads and pastries, frozen items, artisan products, charcuterie(Spain’s famous cured hams), wine and much more. There are several cafes are located within the market which  offer shoppers and tourists a spot to rest and relax as they grab a bite while  taking the  wondrous sights and sounds  of this great food market.  Aside from the animated and colorful La Boqueria, Barcelona is also home to a fascinating flea market which is held on the Plaça de les Glories  on several days of the week. This market which is called Els Encants or the Mercat Fira de Bellcaire is populated with various kinds of vendors who offer a wide array of goods like antique furniture, jewelry, books, apparel, trinkets, second hand electronics as well as  food and beverages.

Barcelona is a proud Catalan city which  has its own unique language( the Catalan dialect) and cuisine and you must make it a point to sample  some of its characteristic  native fare in the form of dishes like the Pa amb tomàquet which is a traditional Catalan breakfast food that consists of a toasted bread with tomato, seasoned with olive oil and salt  and  the Crema Catalana which a rich custard that is often served with caramelized sugar for desert or used as filling for pastries amongst others.  The city’s many excellent tapas restaurants also offer a wide range of unique finger foods like patatas bravas (fried cubed potatoes), bocarones (vinegar or oil cured anchovies), calamares (fried squid) and  chorizo which are definitely worth sampling as well .

Boulder, Colorado is a mecca for outdoor sports enthusiasts year-round.  It draws mountaineers, bikers, hikers, campers, fishermen and sports climbers during the warmer months .  Boulder is also a center for alternative culture and mainstream education.  The city offers attractions both urban and natural.  Shopping, dining and nightlife can be found on Pearl Street, where street performers ply their trade during the summer.  A short distance away, Chautauqua Park, home of the famous rock formations known as the Boulder Flatirons, hosts hikers, climbers and picnickers during the days and concerts by the Boulder Symphony on summer evenings.

Santa Fe’s arts scene is well known, with galleries along Canyon Road and in Santa Fe Plaza displaying and selling high quality work.  During the summer, there are numerous festivals that celebrate the city’s culture.  The Santa Fe Arts and Crafts Festival takes place throughout the summer in the central plaza.  A jazz festival, wine tasting events, folk art markets, a rodeo and a classical music festival fill out the summer calendar and assure visitors that something will be going on when they arrive.  Golf, horseback riding and treks to the scenic Sangre de Cristo Mountains mean that adventure can be as much a part of the trip as culture.

Las Vegas is a year-round destination mostly known for its casinos.  But there is a surprising amount of alternative attractions in Sin City, especially during the summer.  Family-friendly sites, like the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay Casino Resort and the Lion Habitat the the MGM Grand, are examples of this new side of Vegas, while old classics like the Bellagio Fountains and the Flamingo Garden are still worthwhile places to visit.  M&Ms World and the newly-built CityCenter are other alternatives to the blackjack tables.

Summer vacation in Las Vegas?  With so many non-gaming attractions in one place, it might not be a bad idea if you want convenience, diversity and excitement.

In reality, the airplanes you fly on won’t be overrun by poisonous snakes or any other type of menacing creature.  But, depending on which airline you fly, you might see some pretty ugly things.  No, finding crumbs or stickiness in your seat or using an unclean lavatory is not as bad a receiving a lethal snakebite, but it can make you question your choice of airline.

So which airlines are the most likely to fail the white glove test?

Last fall, an extensive survey by SmarterTravel.com revealed surprisingly (embarrassingly?) low scores for legacy carriers in the US.  Over 20% of fliers surveyed thought that US Airways had the dirtiest cabins, with American, Delta and United each taking a 15% share of the uncleanliness.  With only 5% of the vote, Continental was the cleanest of the big boys.  Low cost carriers like Midwest, AirTran and Virgin America earned high marks for their well-manicured seats and lavatories.

There have been rumors from the offices of both Spirit Air and Ryanair that they would introduce some sort of coin-operated pay-to-pee lavatories.  Spirit has since opted for advertisements in its bathrooms as a money maker rather than forcing people who didn’t bring correct change to hold it (or worse).

Baggage does not require the same level of sanitation as passengers, but there have been stories of bags being contaminated.  This past winter, Delta passengers traveling from Puerto Rico to Denver claimed that their bags were soaked with jet fuel when they picked them up from baggage claim.

Of course there is some good with all the negative.  After extensive polling, All Nippon Airways (ANA) decided to designate an all women lavatory on each of its aircraft.

Airlines have also become cognizant of the fact that passengers might be to blame for some of the in-cabin unpleasantness.  Earlier this year, a man was booted of a flight operated by Canada’s Jazz Airline for being too smelly.  The offender was allowed to fly the following day, after he showed up at the airport with an improved odor.

On a more serious note, major airlines finally seem to be coming to their senses about cabin cleanliness.  United, which previously only gave their planes a thorough cleaning twice yearly, is seeking to get back to fundamentals by upping the number of scrubs each fleet-member gets.   Other legacy carriers seem to be following suit.

Though it is easiest to blame an airline for a flight delay or cancellation, the circumstances are sometimes beyond their control.  Storms, erupting volcanoes or security alerts can cause mass cancellations.  Of course, more often than airlines would care to admit, their own scheduling decisions are to blame.

Delays and cancellations at the airport are only part of the story.  What about that overbooked flight where passengers get bumped off the plane through no fault of their own?  Or worse, what about those horror stories of planes idling on the tarmac for hours with passengers trapped in the cabin with overflowing toilets and crying infants?

Passengers’ journeys can even be delayed after landing.  Even if you haven’t been a victim yourself, you’ve often seen the unfortunates with frowns on their faces waiting at the lost baggage counter as you wheel away from baggage claim.

So which airlines are the most dangerous to fly if you want to arrive on time?  Let’s do the numbers:

The current king of lateness is American Airlines affiliate American Eagle.  Their somewhat respectable 82% on time rating for Spring 2010  makes them the US industry’s worst when it comes to sticking to the schedule.   The good news? The industry average (85%) is currently more than six percentage points better than it was last year (79.1%).  Even lowly American Eagle sits above 2009’s woeful benchmark.

American Eagle also struggled when it came to baggage handling.  They averaged 7.78 mishandled suitcases for every 1,000 pieces of luggage.  The industry average is just over 3 bags-per-one-thousand.  Other regional carriers affiliated with major airlines also fared poorly, with names like American Southeast and Comair near American Eagle in terms of mishandled baggage.

The recently published Airline Quality Ratings (full .pdf version here), a respected airline industry report, ranks Delta (15 of 18 domestic carriers) as the lowest on-time airline amongst legacy carriers.  United was ranked two spots above them.

So readers are not left with a completely bad taste in their mouth, here are some of the best schedule stickers.  Hawaiian, with its few routes covering ever-sunny skies, topped the list, as its has done for much of the decade, with an above-93% on time rating.  AirTran and Jet Blue also scored quite highly (a change from  woeful performances earlier in the past decade).  Jet Blue, which has improved massively since its PR nightmare where passengers were stranded on the tarmac for over 10 hours during a stretch of bad weather a few years ago, has a high on-time rate and has the distinction of being one of the few airlines that never bump passengers from flights.

In Europe, British Airways, as it has for the past few years, topped the continent’s lost luggage list.  Low-cost-carriers Virgin and Ryanair also performed poorly when it came to making sure suitcases and passengers arrived at the airport simultaneously.

A new law aimed at reducing tarmac delays by fining airlines whose planes sit on the runway for over three hours seems to have had a positive effect.  Only 4 three-hour delays have taken place since late March, when the rule became law.  US Airways made the largest improvement to its delay record of any major airline in the country.

We crossed paths with this elephant herd in northern Namibia, the smaller of the two babies is approximately six weeks old and the larger baby is aprox six months old. We’ve seen more elephants than people in Namibia.

The most common question fliers are asked after arriving at the airport: “how was your flight?”  You could answer with complaints about food, seatmates, flight attendants with attitude or turbulence.  But that is all relative.  The bottom line when it comes to judging an airline: they were able to get you to the destination safely.

If you look at the percentages, air travel is much, much safer than braving the highway in a car.  Airplane accidents, though they get a lot of media coverage, are extremely rare.  Most fliers go their entire lives experiencing no more than turbulence and the occasional bumpy landing.

But accidents do happen.  Choosing an airline based on its safety record is reasonable, but does not necessarily  guarantee safety.  Dustin Hoffman’s classic character in Rain Man famously claimed he would not fly any airline besides Qantas because it was the only one that had not had a fatal crash.  A few years ago, a series of incidents turned the Rain Man scene from advertisement into irony.

The Daily Beast recently ranked airlines based on their safety.  For domestic fliers in the US, these statistics should be taken in context.  Every commercial airline in the US has an enviable safety records when compared to lesser known airlines around the world.  Over the past year, Continental saw the most in-flight incidents.  Delta and United were not far behind.  No US carrier has been involved in a major crash since 2001.

Not all airlines put the same premium on safety.  Last year, an Aeroflot plane headed to New York from Moscow was halted when passengers noticed the pilot stumbling and slurring his speech prior to takeoff.  According to a reporter who was on-board, when passengers raised concerns, an Aeroflot employee announced: “It’s not such a big deal if the pilot is drunk.  Really, all he has to do is press a button and the plane flies itself. The worst that could happen is he’ll trip over something in the cockpit.”

Finally, passengers demands for a new crew were accepted.

That was not the worst Aeroflot incident.  Earlier in the  year, a domestic flight crashed, killing 88 people.  Alcohol was found in the pilot’s body.  Another fatal crash occurred in 1994, when a pilot let his 15 year old son take over the controls.  The boy sent the plane into a nose-dive, killing all on board.

But Russia is not the most dangerous place to fly.  According to the EU, Africa has that distinction.  The EU has banned numerous airlines from Congo, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Equatorial Guinea and Angola.

Another major international airline with a bad reputation in Garuda, Indonesia’s national carrier.  A series of accidents, most of them involving domestic flights, caused the airline to be banned from EU airspace.  The ban was recently lifted after the carrier cleaned up its act.

The bottom line: if you stick to major commercial carriers, you chances of dying in an airplane crash are akin to hitting the winning lottery numbers.

The average flier probably doesn’t pay too much attention to flight attendants. They merely want to get from point A to point B without hassle.  As long as a member of the cabin staff doesn’t spit in their drink, bar them from the lavatory or spill coffee in their lap, everything is roses.

For other fliers, though, decent service is one of the necessities of a positive air travel experience.

In recent years, some aspects of the in-flight experience have been taken out of the hands of  flight attendants.  It is not their fault that most airlines have adopted a la carte pricing; forcing passengers to pay for everything from a blanket and pillow to a drink to (allegedly – see below) the bathroom.

Most fliers will cite these recent a la carte experiences as proof that in-flight service is not what it used to be.  Of course, this is mostly due to cost cutting measures made by the airlines, not the misdeeds of cabin staff.

Peanuts and water have replaced full meals or more substantial snacks on most flights, and frequent fliers may even find these munch-ables a rarity.  Still, food plays an important part in people’s perceptions of airlines.

A recent survey by SeatGuru showed that food, when it actual was served, was worst on American Airlines, United and US Airways.  International airlines scored much higher, with Air France and Singapore Air topping the overall list.  Continental was the only US carrier to receive a significant amount of positive feedback from survey-takers for its edibles.

Though not part of an official survey, Doug Lansky, author of the worst-of-travel book Titanic Awards, recently published photos of the five worst airline meals in the Huffington Post.  If you want to cure your hunger pangs, merely taking a look at these photos – featuring the culinary miscarriages of Aeroflot, Ukraine International, Air Bostwana and Alitalia – will be enough to have you rummaging through  your carry-on for that Snickers you think you remembered to pack.

Low-cost-carriers are notorious for their non-customer-service-oriented staff.  Ireland’s Ryanair employs flight attendants who are often more akin to surly junior high hall monitors than helpful customer care representatives (perhaps taking a cue from their brash CEO).  In the US, regional carriers affiliated with major airlines (such as American Airlines affiliate American Eagle) generally score quite low on quality surveys.  Independent LCCs in the US  fare much better when it comes to customer satisfaction.  JetBlue, Southwest and Midwest often top survey-informed rankings.

Skytrax, a research firm that ranks airlines worldwide after extensive user-surveying, is a good source for learning the quality of international airlines.  The only carrier to receive one-star (out of five) is North Korea’s national carrier Air Koryo.

There a numerous two-star airlines, though Ryanair is the only notable member of the group.  Its now-infamous staff received only a single star when it came to helpfulness and treatment of passengers.  National carriers of less visited countries (Air Nepal, Cubana Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways and Air Malawi) are Ryanair’s low-quality peers, though operations budgets may be a major reason for poor performance and lack of amenities.

Spirit has made no alternate arrangements leaving travelers with refunds, a $100 flight credit for a future Spirit flight and no way to fly home or start their trip unless they can find another flight on another carrier on short notice AND pay the full-fare, walk-up price.

Shame on Spirit Airlines for it’s reckless behavior and complete lack of consideration for it’s passengers. They should start allowing travelers to cancel and get full refunds for flights scheduled for at least the next two weeks.
