Paris, London and Rome are three of the most well known vacation spots in Europe. But instead of fighting crowds for croissants, why not go off the beaten path a little and meander towards Belgium this fall.
Stop by for an autumn drink at the ‘Le Magnum’ bar in Bruges. With the new Autumn Colours Package, this drink is included, along with a 4-course meal at Le Mystique restuarent. Once you’ve enjoyed your meal, take a horse drawn carriage ride through the autumnal colors of red, orange, yellow and purple in one of Europe’s secret gems. This package is available through December 21.

Enjoy a fire after a chilly day exploring Bruges
While you’re over that way, check out some of the historical architecture. The city is known for it’s history, but also contains some of the most cutting edge contemporary architecture. Architects Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem built the “Concertgebouw” or Concert Hall which sports an impressive tower called the “Latern Tower” which overlooks the Zand. The Barge Bridge, another architectural wonder of Bruges, links Bargeplein, which is at the edge of the city, with the entrance to Minnewater Park. With it’s red color and asymmetrical design is impressive to the eye. There’s also a slew of historically important churches to explore – even if you’re not religious, they’re breathtaking to say the least.
If you’re more of a museum person then an architecture person, Bruges has a laundry list of different museums, especially religious ones. However, if you prefer to eat your way through an exhibit, check out the “Choco-Story” which showcases the ancient Mexican world of the Mayas and Aztecs “drink of the Gods” or as we know it, chocolate. I can tell you that this chocoholic’s tummy is growling just thinking about the possibilities.
If chocolate isn’t your best friend, but diamonds are, head over to the Diamond Museum and prepare to be dazzled. You’ll learn about the history of Europe’s oldest diamond center. Diamonds also happen to be one of Belgium’s most important export products. But no, the streets are not paved with diamonds. Or chocolate.
But they may be paved with fries?! Bruges is home to the Freitmuseum. For those who can’t translate that, it’s a museum dedicated to Belgian Fries. Oh yes, you read right. Housed in one of Belgium’s oldest buildings, this museum shows the entire history of this fried treat from potato to the first fries. The best part is the tasting at the end of the tour with a plethora of delicious sauces. Yum!
With all of these tours costing under 10 Euro, there’s no reason to not explore this little, undiscovered corner of Europe. If you’re looking for a price more in the “free” range, here is a list of public gardens in Bruges. Of course, flowers may not be around depending on when you go but you can still experience some wonderful foliage.
